City Group Discussion 10.31.21 Colossians 3:17-21

Family is all about Jesus”

Ice Breaker – What is your Halloween candy or treats???

Colossians 3:17-21 Read it aloud together !!

You might want to start out with a general question to everyone: What did you hear?  How did that direct your response?

Eric gave us this as a guide – Marriages display gospel peace WHEN wives give submissive love and husbands give selfless love.

Married folks: How have you seen that work out in your marriage?

Un-married folks: How have you observed this in friends that are married?

Submission is not: – (a compiled list from Erick, Doug and John Piper…..)

easy to understand

a historical, cultural idea

every woman to every man all the time to the same degree

with out a purpose

blindly agreeing to everything with your husband on everything

not doing everything your husbands tells you to do

So then – What might submissive love be?  Erick takes us to another letter from Paul – Ephesians 5:33 Paul writes this – ….. let the wife see she respects her husband.

How can this motivate both wives and husbands in our day to day living?

Husbands – Col 3:19 Husbands love your wives and DON’T be harsh with them.

What is a definition of the word harsh?  It can mean “bitter tasting”  I don’t know about you, but when I order food in a restaurant I’m NOT looking for something that bites and causes me to wince!

Erick gave us a list of what Selfless love is NOT…

simply sappy love

passive love

distant love

dictatorial of disrespectful love

Guys – how can this motivate us to love our wife in and understanding way?

Children and Fathers Col. 3:20-21

Paul starts with the kids – and he writes that obeying parents pleases the Lord.

How does the work?

As followers of Jesus one responsibility of parents is training our kids to follow Jesus.

Dads – don’t provoke your kids.

What might that look like?

Erick gives us a few ideas as dads and moms to consider

be consistent

don’t create petty rules

don’t be more committed to “parenting principles” than your kids

don’t tear down your kids when they mess up

What is a different path to take as parents when parenting gets tough and overwhelming?

Erick went back to Colossians 2:12-16

in short – as parents let’s put on – Compassion, patience forgiveness, love and harmony

Pray for one another and with each other!!
